How To: Hide That Pesky NFC Icon from Your HTC One's Status Bar (Root Required)

Hide That Pesky NFC Icon from Your HTC One's Status Bar (Root Required)

If you turned on your HTC One for the first time and wondered what that weird icon that looks like an N is, it indicates that NFC is on. It seems strange to me that HTC wanted to waste Status bar space on an NFC indicator, but sometimes we just have to deal with it.

However, if you're a softModder, you don't have to just deal with it. The icon can't be removed permanently, but there is a very easy way to hide it forever.

Step 1: Root Your HTC One & Install TWRP

If you haven't already, make sure you root your HTC One and install a custom recovery like TWRP. We have a guide on how to do that right here.

Step 2: Download the Transparent Icon Mod

For this mod, we have Android dev SmiLey487 to thank. It's a simple transparency mod that you'll need to flash with your recovery.

Download the NFC_NoIcon.zip from SmiLey487's XDA thread and copy it to your internal storage

Step 3: Boot into Recovery

To install the mod, we have to go into recovery mode.

  1. Turn off your device.
  2. Press and hold Volume Down and Power to boot into HBOOT.
  3. Press Volume Down to select Recovery.
  4. Press the Power button to confirm.

Step 4: Install the Mod

Now that we have TWRP up and running, just tap on Install, locate the NFC_noicon.zip and tap on it, then Swipe to Confirm Flash.

It will take longer to reboot just once because the mod wipes the cache, so it has to be rebuilt when you reboot the device. After it's ready, you'll now see that the NFC icon is hidden. It's actually still there, you just can't see it anymore.

It's that simple!

How to Get the NFC Icon Back

If you ever want to get the NFC icon back in your Status bar, you can get the stock zip here. Just flash it using the recovery exactly like we did above and the icon will show up again.

Why would you even have NFC enabled all the time?

Why would you NOT leave it enabled all the time?

Edit: The comment I was replying to is gone.

There's an even simpler approach that doesn't involve rooting and installing mods.

Go into Settings and disable NFC.

Seriously, just go into the large list view of all the Settings, at the end of the Wireless and Networks area, there's a "More..." link. From there you can turn off NFC. The icon hides itself.

This approach worked just fine on my HTC One M8. It should work on other flavors of Android too that skin the settings screen in similar ways. Perhaps previous HTC releases didn't expose this setting?

It just worked on my M7 which is running kitkat :)

They did, but this is for people who leave NFC on, like myself, and hate seeing the icon.

Root your phone? - you are crazy.. just disable NFC - and icon gone.
go to:
Settings
Wireless & Networks
... More
NFC
OFF (top right)

(talk about the generation of over-engineering - sheesh)

You've missed the point, Billy, embarrassingly so. The point being a method to hide or remove the icon whilst NFC is active. Unfortunately this method doesn't work on my OPPO Find 7.
